PUBLIC PRIVATE RELIGIOUS PROFIT & NON- PROFIT GOVERNMENT HOSPITAL SYSTEMS

HOSPITAL CLASSIFICATIONS Hospitals are classified by how they are funded (how they make money). Profit Non-profit Religious Government

PUBLIC Public has county, state or federal financial support. May charge Medicaid and Medicare (government funded healthcare) and private insurers for the care of patients. Examples: Grady Georgia Regional Hospital

PRIVATE Owned by individuals or groups. Do not receive government funding. Can turn away homeless and uninsured patients. Only required to stabilize emergent situations and then transfer to public if patient unable to pay. Examples: Humana Tenet

RELIGIOUS Affiliated with religious organization. Receive funding from religious organization. Examples: St. Josephs Catholic Health East

NON-PROFIT Money is used to improve services. Don’t have to pay taxes! How are they funded? Examples: Northside (private) Piedmont (private) Wellstar (public)

GOVERNMENT VA Hospitals Are funded by tax dollars!
