Minerals A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid, with a definite structure and composition.
Minerals. What is a mineral? 5 Characteristics of a mineral Naturally Occurring Naturally Occurring Inorganic (Not Living) Inorganic (Not Living) Always.
COLOR Color is not usually a definitive property of a mineral. Color will only be definitive is it is a major constituent in the mineral. A good example.

Mineral Identification. Color Most notable characteristic Caused by presence of trace elements or compounds Least reliable way to identify a mineral because:
*What is a Mineral?*  Naturally occurring  Inorganic  Solid  Definite crystalline structure * = Most Important information.

Properties of Minerals. What is a mineral? Minerals are a naturally occurring solid that are found in the rocks and soil of earth. Rocks are made out.
* There are many properties that can be used to identify minerals. * Any one property is not enough to identify minerals.
Aim: How can we identify minerals?
Mineral Identification. Physical Properties Individual minerals have unique properties that distinguish them. –Appearance –Hardness »Mohs Scale –Luster.
COLOR  The color of the mineral you observe with your eyes.  The streak color does not always match the minerals color due to impurities, water, and.

Mineral Identification Vocabulary

Appearance what a mineral looks like (color, shape, size) NOT A VERY RELIABLE TEST

Hardness a measure of how easily a mineral scratches

Mohs Scale of Hardness a scale comparing the hardness of 10 common minerals. Has values of 1-10

Luster the way a mineral reflects light

Metallic shines like metal

Non-metallic Non-metallic luster contains 5 different lusters. They are: 1.Vitreous 2.Resinous 3.Pearly 4.Greasy 5.Adamantine

Vitreous appears to shine like glass

Resinous appears to be covered in resin (plastic)

Pearly having the iridescent appearance of a pearl

Greasy looks like it is covered in thin grease

Adamantine having the brilliant shine like a diamond

Streak The color of a mineral in powder form. The streak test is done on a streak plate. The mineral must be softer than the streak plate to leave a streak

Cleavage a break along a smooth flat surface

Fracture a break with an uneven, rough, or jagged surface

Other Properties interesting aspects of a mineral that no other mineral has
