1 Answer the Question for Today on the Bellwork sheet.
Get out the notes you took on the Minerals video for me to check!

2 Student will... Students will be able to explain how the earth is affected by long-term and short-term geological cycles and the influence of man.

3 Can I describe and classify the properties of minerals?
Can I describe and classify the properties of minerals?

4 Review Mineral Video Notes

5 After the retest… Read pages

6 Color Color can be used to identify minerals; however, the same mineral can come in a variety of colors. Is color the best way to identify a mineral? Why or why not?

7 Luster Luster: the way a surface reflects light.
Types of Mineral Luster: Metallic: Bright and Reflective Submetallic: dull, reflective Nonmetallic: vitreous (glassy), silky, resinous (plastic), waxy (greasy), Pearly (creamy), earthy (rough).

8 Streak Streak : the color of a mineral in powdered form.
A minerals streak can be found by rubbing the mineral against a piece of unglazed porcelain called a streak plate. The mark left on the streak plate is called the streak.

9 Cleavage and Fracture Cleavage and Fracture: different types of minerals break in different ways. Cleavage is the tendency of some minerals to break along smooth, flat surfaces. Fracture is the tendency of some minerals to break unevenly along curved, jagged, or irregular surface.

10 Hardness Hardness: a minerals resistance to being scratched.
To determine the hardness of minerals, scientists use the Mohs Hardness Scale. The greater the mineral’s resistance to being scratched, the higher the rating. Mohs Hardness Scale ranges from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest).

11

12 Density Density: the measure of how much matter is in a given amount of space (volume) Formula for density : D=m/v (think of a broken heart)

13 Special Properties Special Properties: characterisitcs about a mineral that only a few minerals have (or sometimes it is the only mineral that has that trait. Examples Fluorescence Chemical Reactions Magnetism Taste Smell

14 Exit Ticket What do you think is the BEST way to identify a mineral?
What is the WORST way to identify a mineral?
