For CORE Curriculum --Jennifer Morrow

Define types of vocabulary Explore direct vocabulary instruction Gain methods to use instantly

 Professional Vocabulary  Used by us as teachers, not necessary to use with students  Examples: standards, CORE, threads, PASS, DIBELS, curriculum, BAV  Academic Vocabulary  To be taught to students through direct instruction  Used consistently and often  Can be broken down even further by content/subject area  Should be used across subjects

Why is direct vocabulary instruction so important?

Fourth grade knows 3 rd grade teaches addition. Third grade knows 2 nd grade teaches how to add. Second grade knows 1 st grade teaches adding numbers together. First grade knows K teaches putting numbers together.
