Developmental Education ACAO meeting October, 2011

Concerns quality control Credit equivalent/credit free Transfer Campuses giving credit for dev ed courses curricular alignment Alignment with common core standards Appropriate Placement Definition of college level courses Connections with the high schools success rates Exit criteria for dev ed courses Long term repetition of failed courses faculty preparation Lack of relevant graduate coursework Mostly adjunct

Possible outcomes: Increased success of developmental students Decreased time to completion Increased graduation and transfer rates

Possible actions: Policy revision Setting system-wide expectations Sharing best practices Development of graduate coursework/certificate programs/training

Describe Current Practices and Outcomes Across the System

Describe placement testing practices across the system Information needed: High School outreach efforts (Usually through placement testing or curricular alignment) Diagnostic testing Supplemental use of self-paced open source or other software Exit proficiency criteria established

Assess Curricular Alignment Determine expectations in the major for dev ed competencies esp. math (STEM track, general track, any need for others?) Identify most popular majors and most common “first” math courses being taken for them Determine expectations for completion of dev ed reading and writing courses as pre-requisites

Assess Curricular Alignment Information Needed: Identify remedial/developmental math courses Core dev ed curricula across the system (common definitions and SLOs, and links to Student Mobility project) Assessment of curricular outcomes Alignment of dev ed outcomes with requirements for credit bearing courses

Faculty Information Needed Numbers of Dev ed full-time faculty/adjunct Qualifications of faculty Types of professional development/graduate coursework available

Programming Information Needed: Modularization of curriculum (format skills based rather than course based) Number of dev ed courses in sequence Number of courses which combine imputed credit and actual credit (stretch courses) Campuses giving credit for dev ed Scope of credit free courses

Administrative structure for dev ed Information Needed Located within disciplines or as a separate unit Use of and coordination with support services (advising/tutoring)

Student Success Information Needed: Numbers % of students who test into dev ed Numbers % who enroll Numbers % who complete sequence Number % who complete credit coursework Number % who complete degrees Number % who transfer Numbers of times students repeat dev ed courses

Next Steps Form College Readiness Steering Committee Collect data and information and report out Formulate policy recommendations Establish recommendations for best practices
