Essential Question: Why does the moon appear to change its shape? Objective: I can identify the phases of the moon. Standard: Explain the different phases of the moon using a model of the earth, moon, and sun.

 Brain Pop: on/ on/  Why does the moon appear illuminated??  What causes moon phases?  How long does it take to get from one full moon to the next?  What is a lunar month?

 The light that seems to come from the moon is actually light reflected from the sun.

 The moon takes about 29.5 days to make one full counter-clockwise revolution around the sun.  The length of that time is called a Lunar Cycle.

 Exactly half of the moon is lit by the sun.  No matter where the moon is on its normal orbit around Earth, the sun always shines on 50% of the moon.  It just appears to change shape because of your point of view.

 Whatever half of the moon faces the sun is the half lit by sunlight.  Remember: Half (50%) is ALWAYS lit by the sun.  Since the moon does not stay in place, you see different parts of the lit half of the moon.  Because the Earth rotates, your part of Earth faces the moon once a day.

 What causes the moon to appear to change shape?  How long does it take the moon to complete one complete Lunar Cycle?  How much of the moon is always lit?  In what direction does the moon orbit the Earth?

 A NEW MOON happens when the moon is located between the Earth and the sun.  When the moon is in this position, the entire bright side of the moon faces away from Earth, so it is not visible.

AS THE MOON CONTINUES IN ITS ORBIT, IT IS NO LONGER DIRECTLY BETWEEN THE EARTH AND THE SUN.  The next phase you see is called a WAXING CRESCENT.  The crescent appears to get bigger over time, until half of the moon appears to be lit.  This is called a FIRST QUARTER moon.

 When most of the moon’s bright side is facing us, it is called a WAXING GIBBOUS.

 When the moon has moved halfway around its orbit, the whole lit side of the moon faces Earth and you see a phase called a FULL MOON.

AFTER A FULL MOON, YOU BEGIN TO SEE LESS OF THE LIT HALF OF THE MOON.  You will first notice a WANING GIBBOUS moon, where most of the left side is lit.  When half of the bright side of the moon is facing away from Earth, a THIRD QUARTER (or last quarter) moon is visible.  The moon has officially completed 3/4 of its lunar cycle.

 As the moon wanes more, you see a WANING CRESCENT.

 When the bright side of the moon is turned away from Earth, you see a NEW MOON phase again.  Then the cycle repeats.  Remember this occurs every 29.5 days.  Note: Northern Hemisphere moon phases are opposite to the Southern Hemisphere moon phases.

 About how long does it take for the moon to go from one full moon to the next full moon?  A. 15 days  B. 30 days  C. 45 days  D. 60 days

 How much of the lit side of the moon is visible during a full moon?  A. None  B. Half  C. Most  D. All

 Which phase of the moon comes right before the full moon?  A. New Moon  B. Third Quarter  C. Waxing Gibbous  D. Waning Gibbous

 What is the source of the moon’s light?  A. Earth  B. the Sun  C. the Moon  D. the Stars

 What moon phase is visible when the moon is directly in front of the sun?  A. Full  B. New  C. 1 st Quarter  D. Waxing Gibbous
