PHASE 1: ORGANIZE FOR SUCCESS/PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MAPP is initiated by lead community partners coming together in an organized manner to prepare for planning Requires high level commitment from partners, stakeholders, and residents Health departments must continue to cultivate relationships with these entities and individuals to keep them engaged Successful engagement will lead to a successful implementation of a community health improvement plan

ACCREDITATION READINESS The MAPP process is used in developing Community Health Assessments (CHAs) & Community Health Improvement Plans (CHIPs) CHAs & CHIPs are two of three documents required to apply for national Public Health Accreditation

PHAB MEASURE L PURPOSE Measure L is one of four measures related to the community health improvement plan The purpose of this measure is to assess the local health department's collaborative community health improvement process and the participation of stakeholders

PHAB MEASURE L DETAILS Required documentation: a community health improvement planning process that included: Broad participation of community partners Information from community health assessments Issues and themes identified by stakeholders in the community Identification of community assets and resources A process to set health priorities

BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Brings in knowledge about the community--needs, concerns, and issues Creates advocates for the community health improvement process Expands awareness about the community health improvement process Adds credibility to the community health improvement process Expands the base for doing work during the process Identifies potential obstacles to implementing the results of the process

CHALLENGES TO ENGAGING COMMUNITY MEMBERS Lack of time, resources Competing agendas Distrust of government Lack of understanding public health their expertise related to public health Bureaucracy

STRATEGIES FOR TRUE ENGAGEMENT Provide clarity of purpose Advertise meetings, forums, etc. well in advance Hold events at different times and in different locations Provide child care Start and end on time Incorporate networking time at events Recognize contributions and celebrate achievements

Use facilitation techniques to: Check in on understanding, agreement (Fist to Five) Make all voices heard (Brainstorming/Affinity diagrams) Achieve consensus (Nominal Group Technique, Multi- voting) Communicate in-between meetings through: Media (especially for elected officials’ benefit) On-line venues (issues forum, blog, listserv) Current web site that describes process, progress STRATEGIES FOR TRUE ENGAGEMENT
