Trade in Agriculture in the EAC: Implications on Food Security and Rural Livelihood in Tanzania Monica A. Hangi Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF), Tanzania

Food Security and Rural Livelihood in Tanzania  By 2008, 33.3% of Tanzanians lived below the Basic Needs Poverty line; 17% of the population was below the food poverty line  Poverty still remains high in rural areas, 37.4% of the rural population; and 18.4% are below the food poverty line  Most Households in Tanzania consume 2-3 meals per day; with few percentages of people having fewer meals than usual: overall 25.1% and 24.5% from rural population

Regional Trade: Tanzania  Tanzania’s position in agricultural trade in EAC.  National policies favoring trade in Tanzania, with the outcome implication in the national food security and rural livelihood  Regional trade expansion mechanisms

Objectives of the Study The study aims to provide new and valuable insights based on the analysis of the past and current patterns of regional trade in agriculture and their impact on food security and rural livelihood in Tanzania

Specific Objectives Specifically, the study will address:  Analyzing the recent trends in regional agricultural trade in EAC; and on food security and rural livelihoods in Tanzania  Examining the r/ship between regional trade in agriculture and food security and rural livelihood in Tanzania

Methodology The study will employ a correlation of matrices methodology (statistical analysis) in analyzing data and addressing the identified objectives.

Data Collection Secondary data. Sources will include:  Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics (through the HBS reports)  The EAC secretariat (for a regional overall picture)  The Ministries of Trade and Agriculture & Livestock of Tanzania

Target Groups Findings and recommendations of the study intends to assist:  National Policy makers in the agricultural sector  Regional partners (trading partners)  CSOs: farmers and rural development organizations  Private sector (investment)
