Volcanoes! By Mia Gittens

Introduction The word volcano comes from an island off Sicily called volcano that was originally named after Vulcan the Roman god of fire. The highest volcano in the world was the Antofalla volcano in Argentina reaching 6,500 meters above sea level. These are some of the famous volcanoes known all around the world Etna in Sicily, Vesuvius in Italy, Krakatoa in Indonesia and Mt St Helens in the USA. Vesuvius caused huge damage because when the volcano erupted all the ash buried the town.

The Eruption 1. Large magma chamber 2. Bedrock 3. Conduit (pipe) 4. Base 5. Sill 6. Dike 7. Layers of ash emitted by the volcano 8. Flank9. Layers of lava emitted by the volcano 10. Throat 11. Parasitic cone 12. Lava flow 13. Vent 14. Crater 15. Ash cloud The eruption of a volcano is caused by molten rock escaping from the centre of the earth. This is formed by the build up of pressure in the centre.

This is what an erupting volcano looks like from above.
