HMP 3 The Health Professions Mentor Program (HPMP) provides UCSD undergraduates the opportunity to form a relationship with a UCSD or community health professional who will serve as a mentor to assist in preparation for a future career in one of the health professions. HPMP provides health professionals the opportunity to foster bright and talented UCSD students as they develop and grow.

UCSD undergraduates who are enrolled in the Health & Medical Professions Preparation Program (HMP3) are eligible to apply for HPMP. Applicants must attend an orientation in order to receive their mentor, which is designed to foster professionalism in their interactions with mentors and patients. Priority is given to seniors and juniors with a 3.0 overall GPA and above. Sophomores are eligible if there are enough mentors.

During their meetings with their mentors, students may shadow them in their work environment, interview them about their education and career path (even lifestyle considerations), discuss application strategies, or any other activity the mentor deems worthwhile. Mentors are welcome to form a relationship in whatever way works best for them and their mentees. After each visit, students write in an online journal, allowing them to reflect on their experiences and save them for later, to help prepare for their application essays and interviews.

What students are saying

Professional Liaisons, who are members of the HMP 3 Student Board, recruit new doctors, dentists, pharmacists, optometrists, etc. each year to serve as mentors to students who would like to gain exposure to the health profession of their choice. They also help to plan the annual Health Professions Mentor Symposium in the spring, where mentors in the program present interesting cases, talk about the mentorships they offer and answer students’ questions one- on-one.

The mentor program is in its second decade, and this year we have a record number of participants. It is my goal to see that as many of our students as possible have the chance to be exposed to a respected member of the health profession of their choice-- for the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their future and get advice from a knowledgeable professional in that field. Our mentors are generous, dedicated and committed to their mentees. Our students are some of the best people on campus, bright, enthusiastic and altruistic. I am gratified by the opportunity to bring mentors and mentees together, to help develop the health professionals of the future.

Please contact Adele Savage, at if you have any questions about the Health Professions Mentor Program.
