What Works Jan 18th 2016 WIS Presentation Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Wendy Harris Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 161

What is an LSA? What is their role? What is their purpose? Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 2

Teacher or LSA? The teacher plans lessons and directs learning The LSA provides support to the teacher and through this to students and to the teaching of the curriculum Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 3

Effective practice for using the LSA will: foster the participation of students in the social and academic processes of a school seek to enable students to become more independent learners help to raise standards of achievement for all students Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 4

What is a shadow LSA? Does a shadow LSA mean effective practice? Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 5

What we do -Wave 3 level of support -LSAs linked to faculty areas -LSAs specialising in areas of SEN Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 7 ENGLISH3 MATHS3 SCIENCE3 HUMANITIES3 VAPA1 LANGUAGES1 ARABIC1

Include LSAs in your planning ‘Dedicated planning time is essential if support is to be effective’ (Stephanie Lorenz, Effective In-Class Support) Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 8

Why? Where LSAs have been included in the planning, the quality of support is seen to be much higher and the outcomes significantly better than where LSAs are left to pick up the threads of a lesson alongside the students they are supposed to be supporting Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 9

Short term planning Short-term planning may involve a few minutes to inform the LSA in advance of the lesson, with both an explanation by the teacher of his or her plans and conversation between the teacher and the LSA about the LSA’s contribution. Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 10

Medium term planning Medium-term plans will generally require a longer conversation between the teacher and the LSA, once a term or more. It is important to try to fit in this time, as the more the LSA knows about the lessons, the more help and support they can offer. -Ensure to invite them to meetings -Supply them with schemes of work Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 11

Develop feedback mechanisms Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 12

Why? As a member of your team, an LSA is in a good position to -observe student performance -provide the teacher with valuable thoughts on what works for students, what obstacles to learning they encounter, and the effectiveness of classroom processes and organisation Feedback to the teacher by the LSA after group or individual work should contribute to the teacher’s assessment of the relevant students and provides information that is valuable in planning their future work. Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 13

Use your LSA creatively and wisely Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 14

Involve your LSAs in the Performance Management Process Using LSAs in the classroom: An alternative approach Jan 16 15
