Chapter 9 Lesson 9-1: Understanding Percents Objective: We will learn to compare quantities by using percents.

Steps to change a fraction into a percent: A percent is a ratio that describes a part of a 100. 60% means 60 per hundred (or out of 100). So 100% represents a whole. Steps to change a fraction into a percent: Percent means “out of 100”, so you need to write a fraction with a denominator of 100. So if you have a fraction, you must think: what number do I need to multiply by to get 100. For example: 7 × 4 = 28 25× 4 = 100 = 28% * If a fraction is already over 100, the numerator is the percent, for example: 75 = 75% 100

When they ask you to use percents to compare fractions, you have to turn the fractions into percents and then say if they are <,>, or =. For example: 6 and 3 = 20 10 6 × 5 = 30 3 × 10 = 30 20 × 5 = 100 = 30% 10 × 10 = 100 = 30% Answer: 30% = 30%

Your Example: Convert the fractions to percents. Then compare by writing >, <. =. 7 and 3 10 4

Homework: Express each fraction as a percent. 1. 47 100 2. 8 10 3. 48.3 4. 15 20 5. 2 5 Convert the fractions to percents. Then compare by writing >, <. =. 6. 6 and 3 20 10 7. 11 and 1 25 2 8. 1 and 6 4 25 9. 3 and 4 4 5 10. 7 and 18 10 25
