Recalling Details FOR LITERARY TEXT

Learning Objective Today we will explain literary text by referring to details and examples. Tell your partner what we will learn to do today.

Who is the story about? What is the problem? How was the problem solved? Think Pair Share

Explaining text by using details. In order to understand the text it is important to ask yourself questions like:  Who is the text about?  Where and when does the story take place?  What happens in the text?  Why do the characters act the way they do?  What are causes and effects of the events?

Remember! When recalling details we look for evidence found in text!

Easy steps to help recall details! 1. Read the text 2. Recall the details by asking yourself the 5w’s and how 3. Look for evidence in the text The 5w’s and How Who What When Where Why How

Lets look at an example? The Anxious Leaf Once upon a time a little leaf was heard to sigh and cry, as leaves often do when a gentle wind is about. And the twig said, "What is the matter, little leaf?" And the leaf said, "The wind just told me that one day it would pull me off and throw me down to die on the ground!" The twig told it to the branch on which it grew, and the branch told it to the tree. And when the tree heard it, it said, "Do not be afraid. Hold on tightly, and you shall not go till you want to.“ And so the leaf stopped sighing, but went on nestling and singing until October. And when the bright days of autumn came the little leaf saw all the leaves around becoming very beautiful. Some were yellow and some scarlet, and some striped with both colors. Then it asked the tree what it meant. And the tree said, "All these leaves are getting ready to fly away, and they have put on these beautiful colors because of joy." Then the little leaf began to want to go, too, and grew very beautiful in thinking of it. Just then a little puff of wind came, and the leaf let go, without thinking of it. He knew that his time had come.

Help answer these questions by using details from the text What changes did the little leaf notice when autumn came? a. It noticed that all of the other leaves were turning colors. b. It noticed that one day it would have to fly away. c. That all the other animals had gone home for the winter. d. That at times life can be difficult to deal with. Who told the leaf not to be afraid? a. The branch b. The tree c. The wind d. The other leaves 1. Read the text 2. Recall the details by asking yourself the 5w’s and how 3. Look for evidence in the text

Catherine was very excited when she learned that both she and her friend Shelly had gotten parts in the class play. She had always wanted to try acting. Mr. Keley, the director, explained that it was important for everyone to attend each rehearsal. One the fourth day of rehearsals, Catherine felt feverish. That night her fever became worse, and the next morning she had to remain in bed. The doctor told Catherine that she would probably miss a week of school. “Oh, no1. I cant miss that much!” she cried. “I’ll be replaced in the class play.” That evening Catherine heard the telephone ring. Several minutes later her mother came into her bedroom. “That was Mr. Keley, your director, on the telephone.” she told Catherine. He called to tell me I’ve been replace, no doubt,” Catherine moaned, suddenly felling worse. “No,” said her mother. “he asked if Shelly could visit you after each rehearsal to keep you informed about the play. Then you’ll be able to catch up when you get back next week.” “Oh, yes!” Catherine screamed excitedly and jumped out of bed. The following week, the play was presented and Catherine was a star performer.
