Presentation transcript:

1.Which layer of the Earth is the thickest? 2.Which layer of the Earth is the thinnest? 3.Which layer of the Earth is the hottest? 4.Which layer of the Earth is the coolest? 5.Which layer of the Earth is the densest?

The mantle is the thickest layer of the Earth’s interior. The crust is the thinnest layer and the coolest layer. The inner core is the hottest and most densest layer.

THE CRUST IS THE SOLID LAYER MADE OF GRANITE AND BASALT ROCK. THE DENSITY OF THE CRUST IS FROM 2.2 g/ml TO 2.9 g/ml THE MANTLE IS MADE OF SILICATES. THE DENSITY OF THE MANTLE IS FROM 3.4 g/ml TO 5.6 g/ml. THE OUTER CORE IS MADE OF LIQUID IRON AND NICKEL. THE DENSITY O F THE OUTER CORE IS FROM 9.9 g/ml TO 12.2 g/ml. THE INNER CORE IS MADE OF LIQUID IRON AND NICKEL. THE DENSITY OF THE INNER CORE IS FROM 12.8 g/ml TO 13.1 g/ml.

The crust consists of two parts: Oceanic crust - The rocks of the oceanic crust are very young compared with the rocks of the continental crust. The rocks of the oceanic crust are not older than 200 million years. The average density of the oceanic crust is 3.0 g/cm³. Continental crust - The continental crust is older than the oceanic crust, some rocks are 3.8 billion years old. The average density of the continental crust is 2.7g/cm³.

The mantle has a layer right beneath the crust called the asthenosphere. It is rock that is hot enough to fold, stretch, compress, and slowly flow with out fracturing (breaking). The lithosphere floats on the asthenosphere.
