Project Background There are many ways in which society can reduce energy costs (you read about some of them after the mechanical energy test). This project will focus on the methods of heat transfer to reduce household energy costs. We have discussed how thermal energy flows (high temperature to lower temperature) the concept of thermal equilibrium, and the methods of heat transfer. Use your knowledge of heat transfer to make recommendations, to reduce energy costs, to someone you know who owns a home. You can also make recommendations to the future version of yourself when you own your own home.

Project Groups You will work in groups of three for this project.

Project Grading You will create a presentation and share it with your teacher via Google Drive. The presentation will include the following: 1. What types of heat transfer need to be considered when making recommendations to a homeowner about reducing their energy costs? 2. What household updates do you recommend the homeowner make to reduce energy costs? 3. What is ‘R’ value and what does a homeowner need to take into consideration when choosing insulation? 4. What is the cost savings for your recommendation? Make sure you take into consideration the cost of installing insulation. 5. List of resources used.

Project Project suggestions  Choose one home to focus on (one you, or a group member, currently live in or will live in in the future) for your group.  Don’t be limited to the resources on your teacher’s website.

Timeline  Projects are due (meaning shared with me via Google Drive) ten minutes after the late bell rings on Wednesday, 2/3.
