 Much of Canada has a cold climate. Most Canadians (more than 75%) have settled where the temperatures are comfortable and natural resources are available.
Physiographic Regions  Within the U.S., geographers have identified over 30 natural regions.  These regions, called physiographic provinces are based.

Human impacts on the North Carolina Biomes

North Carolina is in the Deciduous Biome Biomes

North Carolina is Divided into 3 Biomes 1. Appalachian Mountains possibly oldest mountains in United States X 2. Piedmont French word meaning "foot of the mountain” hilly, rolling land 3. Coastal Plain flat, low-lying piece of land next to the ocean What biome is Raleigh in? Piedmont

North Carolina biomes have unique biotic factors Piedmont Coastal plain Mountains Plants- fir, spruce Crops- apples & Christmas trees Soils- thin A horizon & rocky Elevation- 600 feet to 1mile Rainfall- 40- 90 inches (18 inches snow) Temperature- 30-65 degrees Plants-pine, oak Crops-tobacco, soybeans Soils- eroded A horizon & red clayey subsoil Elevation- 300 feet to 1500 feet Rainfall- 44 inches (1-4 inches snow) Temperature- 40-90’s degrees Plants- willow, cypress Crops- cotton, peanuts Soils-thick dark A horizon, loamy texture Elevation- 0 to 300 feet Rainfall- 55 inches Temperature- 50s-90s

How do Humans Harm North Carolina? Draining wetlands to grow crops or construct buildings Wetlands are natural removers of toxic substances such as human and animal wastes Wetlands are homes to many plants and animals

How do Humans Harm North Carolina? 2. Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) warms Earth’s atmosphere and leads to: Shoreline erosion Flooding More hurricanes Barrier Island

How do Humans Harm North Carolina? 3. Changing farmland to subdivisions Decrease habitat for native plants and animals Add more cars, use more water

How do Humans Harm North Carolina? Changes in the way we grow our food Modern farming- use conventional farming methods Some farmers changing to organic farming

Comparing conventional to organic farming 1. Growing one crop at a time 2. Heavy use of: Pesticides Water Fertilizers Organic 2. A sustainable method of farming 2. Only use what is needed 3. Leave land in better condition when finished farming 4. Less water pollution 5. Less pesticide residue on foods 6. Healthier soil
