Plans to Test HBD Prototype in Run 6 Craig Woody BNL DC Meeting March 8, 2006

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/062 Tests with Prototype Detector in the Lab Shows good gain and stability (no discharges) Attainable oxygen and water levels are reasonable Further testing requires a photocathode B.Azmoun

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/063 Evaporation Facility at Stony Brook

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/064 Evaporation Facility at Stony Brook

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/065 CsI Photocathodes Produced at Stony Brook Show Good Quantum Efficiency Measured on VUV Spectrometer at BNLMeasured during evaporation Stony Brook Relative QE at 160 nm Strip number B.AzmounW.Anderson

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/066 FEE testing block diagram Preamp Test Jig Pulse Generator Clock Master Pulse Generator trigger 5x attenuator scope L1 trigger FEM receiver ADC+FPGA data computer 20:1 attenuator Receiver ADC Test point for receiver output Optical xmit New DCM daughter card In Febrication C-Y.Chi

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/067 Test stand at Nevis Preamp test jig ADC module C-Y.Chi

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/068 Digitized 16mv test pulse result Reverse the signal cable RMS 2 samples at rising edge 1-2 ns time jitter on the test pulse C-Y.Chi

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/069 Prototype Readout Electronics C-Y.Chi The most difficult board (ADC) is ready. – We have two boards – 96 channels Crate, interface boards is ready We need optical transmitter board and new DCM compressor board to readout the detector into PHENIX – Optical PCB will be in Nevis on the March 9 th – The new DCM daughter card will be in Nevis on the 17 th  one week assembly. – We need two weeks testing time, if everything works The odds is with us (ADC, clock master etc prototype works) Assume we are ready to install after that. – I would expect many hours of integration works – We need to understand noise issues, zero suppression level, timing in the detector etc. – It will take a while before the readout can be fully integrated into the PHENIX DAQ just like the experience other detectors have before us

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/0610 Electronics Rack LeCroy crates for readout electronics Megapak Now installed at previous location of MVD rack

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/0611 HBD Installation Gas system in GMH and IR is essentially ready to flow gas Mounts are in place to install detector in its final position

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/0612 Initial Installation for Testing Install below beam pipe on lifting table (outside PHENIX acceptance) during initial debugging period Prototype will add~ 3% X 0

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/0613 Alternative Initial Installation for Prototype

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/0614 Plans to Install HBD Prototype in PHENIX  3/8 – 3/19 Complete tests with prototype at BNL Complete gain and source tests Install mounting brackets Install and test new preamp board  3/20 – 4/2 Take detector to Stony Brook Practice installing GEMs in glove box Produce photocathode and install Test detector with CF 4 using 55 Fe source and flash lamp  4/3 – 4/9 Bring detector to PHENIX electronics room Test detector with prototype readout electronics chain  4/10 – 4/23 Install detector into PHENIX below beam pipe Test gas quality with actual gas system Test detector with prototype readout electronics in place Develop and debug readout software Calibrate with mips  4/24 – 4/30 Install detector to final position in PHENIX Collect sample of electron data ( ~ 100 e’s/pad/shift  1 week data taking) Estimate by T.Sakaguchi : min bias + ERT p>800 MeV/c

C.Woody, DC Meeting, 3/8/0615 Status of Final Detector PCB material arrived at CERN and PCB is now under construction (delivery to Weizmann ~ mid March) Panels for final detector are also under construction at Weizmann GEM’s are being produced at CERN and delivered to Weizmann for testing Aiming for completion of detector box by ~ mid April (will then ship to Stony Brook) Glove box to arrive ~ end of March Detector to arrive at Stony Brook ~ end of April Start producing photocathodes and install during May Could have final detector with 2-3 detector modules installed (all that is needed with existing prototype readout electronics) sometime during May Possible test in PHENIX end of May – early June
