TSUNAMI - A Tsunami, also known as a seismic sea wave, is a series of huge water waves that can cause great devastration and loss of life when they strike a coast.

The word Tsunami comes from the two JAPANESE words:- Tsu:- harbor Nami:- wave

- Regular waves are caused by the wind. - Tsunami are sometimes incorrectly called “Tidal waves”, but Tsunamis are not caused by the Tides. - Tides are caused by the gravitational force of the moon on the sea. - Regular waves are caused by the wind.

Definition “A Tsunami is a very large waves, often caused by an earthquake that flows onto the land and destroys things.” “A Tsunami is a huge wave or water wall that can cause massive amounts of damage.” “A very large & distructive wave, generally caused by a tremendous disturbance in the ocean, such as an undersea earthquake or volcanic eruption.”

Causes of Tsunami A tsunami starts when a huge volume of water is quickly shifted. The rapid movement can happen as a result of an underwater earthquake, a rock slide, a volcanic eruption, or another highenergy event. After the huge volume of water has moved, the resulting wave is very long but not very tall. The wave spreads across the sea in all directions. It can travel great distance from the source at tremendous speed.

EARTHQUAKE - Most Tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes, but not all underwater earthquakes cause Tsunamis. - An earthquake has to be over about magnitude 6.75 on the RICHTER SCALE for it to cause a Tsunami. - About 90% of all Tsunamis occur in the PACIFIC ocean.

LANDSLIDES - Resulting in rockfalls, ice-falls or underwater landslides can generate displacement of water to creat a Tsunami. - More after than thought, submarine landslides are often caused by earthquakes.

VOLCANIC ERUPTION - Volcanic disturbance can generate waves by the sudden displacement of water caused by a volcanic explosion, by a volcano`s slope failure.

The size of a Tsunami - The Tsunami`s have an extremely long wavelength upto several hundred miles long. -In the deep sea, a Tsunami`s height can be only about 1 meter (3 ft.) tall. - Tsunamis are often barely visible when they are in the deep sea. This makes Tsunami detection in the deep sea very difficult.

The SPEED of a Tsunami - A Tsunami can travel at well over 970 kph (600 mph) in the open ocean, as fast as a JET flies. - It can take only a few hours for a Tsunami to travel across an entire ocean. - A regular wave (generated by the wind) travels at upto about 90 km/hr.

Damage to life and property Effect of Tsunami Damage to life and property - A Tsunami can be very tragic on the human population if proper mitigation and evacuation measures are not followed. - Major losses of life & property will take place. - One such event was the 2004 indian ocean Tsunami. - According to official estimates in India 10136 people were killed and thousamds made homeless when a Tsunami triggered by the 2004.

Environlental Impacts - Tsunami not only destroy human life, but have a devastrating effect on Insects, Animals, Plants and natural resources. - It uproots trees and plants and destroys animals habitat such as nesting sites for birds. - Land animals are killed by pollution if dangerous chemicals are washed away into the sea, thus poisoning the marine life. - Solid waste and disaster debris are the most critical environmental problem faced by a Tsunami hit country.

DISEASES - Tsunami waves and the water are very destructive. - The area closed to the coast are flooded with sea water, damaging the infrastructure such as a sewage and fresh water supply for drinking. - Flooding and contamination of drinking water can cause disease to spread in the Tsunami hit areas.

MANAGEMENT PRE-TSUNAMI First we have to know is our home comes under Tsunami prone zone or not. We have to discuss about the Tsunami with family members. Listen the disaster information in T.V. & Radio. Follow the advice given by the local officers.

Example 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake & Tsunami - The 2004 Indian ocean earthquake was undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred on Sunday 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.

The earthquake was caused when the Indian The earthquake was caused when the Indian plate was subducted by the Burma plate and triggered a series of devastating Tsunami. Along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian ocean, killing over 230000 people in 14 countries and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters(100 ft.) high.

It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest hit country, followed by Sri-Lanka, India, Thailand.

With a magnitude of 9.1-9.3 it is the 3rd largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 centimetre.

The resulting Tsunami was given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, South Asian Tsunami, Indonesian Tsunami, The Christmas & The Boxing Day Tsunami.
