Medium-Resolution Global Survey SDCG Core data streams are medium-resolution (~ meter) global survey missions – Global coverage – Consistent revisits – Absolutely calibrated Designed for large area land change analysis over extended periods – Technologically conservative operational missions – Not commercially viable: free and open data policy 3

High-Resolution On-Demand Data Commercial high-resolution on-demand (5 meters or better) – Global capable – Pointable sensors capable of high revisit rates – Large redundant constellation of satellites – Technologically nimble and aggressive 4

Role of SDCG The Space Data Coordination Group’s role is – To ensure country access to core data provided by the CEOS space agencies – To understand the GFOI data needs of the national forest agencies – To support R&D requirements needed to continue to evolve forest monitoring methodologies SDCG’s need to understand GFOI data needs requires knowledge of commercial data opportunities to support GFOI capacity building. SDCG’s need to support R&D requires active coordination between GFOI R&D activities and commercial data providers. SDCG’s role is NOT to coordinate access to commercial data in support of national agency’s operational missions. This introduction is over simplified and is not intended to be exhaustive. The objective is to kickoff the discussion of how best to meet GFOI requirements through use of the freely available core data products, commercial data products, and Space Agency fee-based products. 6
