American Colonies Population and economy were booming 13 Colonies each had their own government Geography provided a sense of independence

Stamp Act Britain was in debt 1765 Parliament passed a law that require colonists to pay a tax to have an official stamp put on wills, deeds, newspapers, and other printed materials

Boston Tea Party 1773 a group of colonists dumped a large load of British tea into Boston Harbor They were protesting a tax on tea King George III ordered the British Navy to close the port

1st Continental Congress Philadelphia, September 1774 Protested the treatment of Boston Tried to persuade Parliament to change by cutting off trade with England.

2nd Continental Congress Philadelphia, 1775 Voted to raise an army and organize under the command of George Washington; beginning the American Revolution 1776 Declaration of Independence
