Observations REVIEW CONCEPTS

Qualitative vs Quantitative Data Qualitative Data Deals with descriptions. Data can be observed but not measured. Colors, textures, smells, tastes, appearance, beauty, etc. Qualitative → Quality Quantitative Data Deals with numbers. Data which can be measured. Length, height, area, volume, weight, speed, time, temperature, humidity, sound levels, cost, members, ages, etc. Quantitative → Quantity

Qualitative Observations  The reactants are clear liquids  The product is yellow  The products are odorless

Qualitative Observations  One reactant is a silver solid  The other reactant is a clear liquid  Reaction produced bubbles

Quantitative Observations  There are three tomatoes  The mass of all tomatoes is 15.5 oz

Quantitative Observations  The temperature is 33.6 °C

Quantitative or Qualitative? 1. It is light green in color. ◦Qualitative 2. It taste sour. ◦Qualitative 3. One leaf is 9 cm long. ◦Quantitative 4. It makes a loud pop sound. ◦Qualitative 5. The mass of the computer is 1 1/2 kg. ◦Quantitative 6. It smells sweet. ◦Qualitative 7. The temperature increases by 8 °C. ◦Quantitative 8. It gets darker over a period of time. ◦Qualitative 9. The flower clusters in 3 blooms. ◦Quantitative 10. Feels very rough. ◦Qualitative 11. The plant is short. ◦Qualitative 12. Leaves are stiff. ◦Qualitative 13. The veins are 3 mm wide. ◦Quantitative

Inferences vs Observations Inferences A mental judgment based on observations Cannot be directly observed Differs based on experiences Observations Using one of your senses - smell, taste, sight, touch, and sound Describe something as it appears A statement describing a fact

Observations Numerous clouds Dark sky

Inferences There are: Numerous clouds Dark sky Therefore, it may rain

What observations can you make in this picture? Based on your observations, what can you infer?
