Outline  Introduction  Needs Assessment and Product Specification  The Design Concepts  Final Design  Prototype Manufacturing and Assembly  Testing and Data Analysis  Cost Analysis/Budget  Conclusion Outline

Introduction 3  Target filled with 3000 lbs. sand  Projectile shot through the target  Documentation of virgin & impacted sand grain morphology

Introduction 4 Fractured sand Projectile Target shot line

Needs Assessment 5  Replace the archeological method for removing samples with a more efficient method.  Take samples of impacted sand without disturbing the path

Product Specifications 6  Removal of sand without disturbance  Portable and detachable  Able to withstand outdoor conditions corrosion/sand resistant  Budget of $1500

7 Design Concepts VortexCore SamplingRotating Blades

8 Final Design Vacuuming  Vacuum excess top layer down to the compacted path  Vacuum a small layer of sand from path  Obtain sample with sticky tape  Vacuum next layer and repeat.

9 Final Design

10 Fabrication  CNC to fabricate end plates and bearing holders  Mill to construct side plates and lead screw nut  Lathe to turn down lead screws and support rods

11 Prototype Manufacturing  Y actuator is 24in x 8in  Z actuator is 17in x 8in  Z actuator mounted vertically onto the horizontally mounted y actuator  Bearing holders and lead screw nut prevent binding and torque forces

12 Assembly  Mechanism  Vacuum  Power supply  Control Box

13 Testing  Range (Top view)  Layer Depth 1”  4” Divisions  Velocity  Flat Layers  Removal Time ≈ 3hrs AxisRange (in)Velocity (in/s) x y z101.87

14 Testing and Data Analysis

15 Cost Analysis/ Budget

16 Conclusion  Removal of sand has been achieved  Detachable frame  Increased Efficiency  Little to no disturbance of projectile path  Happy Sponsor!

Recommendations 17 Optimizations  Full Automation  Use of ESC  Adjust Tip Design  Increase range of motion  Time Efficiency  Inclusion of Electrical Engineer Conclusion Recommendations
