Multiple benefits of integrating trees into farming systems. John Tucker, Director Woodland Creation, Woodland Trust.

Climate change

River Derwent, 2009

Trees can: Reduce surface water run off, soil erosion and flow into streams Act as a “green leaky dam”, slowing water speeds and thereby reducing peak flows and helping mitigate against flooding. Reduce manure and fertiliser run off thereby improving water quality. This can be particularly important in Nitrogen Vulnerable Zones (NVZ).

Pontbren: infiltration rates improved by 90% within 2 years of planting.

“ I am confident that farm woodland creation is about to enjoy a bit of a renaissance, with improved incentives and an increased awareness amongst farmers of the opportunities that exist”. Jim McLaren, President, NFU Scotland.
