Understanding What Makes Up Matter - Elements and Compounds

What is matter? Matter is always in the form of a liquid, solid, or gas. What makes up liquids, solids, and gases? ELEMENTS! Elements are the building blocks of matter. That means elements are the purest substance possible. They CANNOT be broken down into simpler substances.

Elements Examples of Elements include: Helium (He), Hydrogen (H), and Oxygen (O). There are a total of 118 elements that have been discovered.

Periodic Table of Elements

What are elements made of? 1.Atoms: the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element. Elements may have 1 or more atoms. 2.Atoms were first discovered by John Dalton in Atoms are so tiny they can only be seen with a scanning tunneling microscope.

What is inside an ATOM? 1.Protons: carry a positive charge and are located in the nucleus of the atom 2.Neutrons: carry a neutral (or no) charge and are located in the nucleus of the atom 3.Electrons: carry a negative charge and are located in a “cloud” (a space surrounding the nucleus called an electron cloud) and are arranged in “shells”

What are compounds? 1.A compound is formed when two or more elements are combined in a chemical reaction and act like a single substance. 2.An example of a compound is water (H 2 O) or carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Plants take in carbon dioxide. These are their chemical formulas

What are molecules? 1.A molecule is the smallest part of a compound that still has the properties of that compound. 2.Changing the number, kind, or position of atoms in a molecule would result in a molecule of a different substance For example: water molecule always has one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen. Adding an extra oxygen atom would turn a water molecule of a different substance.

On the next slide is an example of a blank concept map. Get a copy of the map & the term bank. Go back and use the information in slides 1-8 to write in the information correctly. Remember to write which slide you found the information in inside the green and yellow circles.
