1  The composition of the penny is 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper.  There have been 11 unique designs printed on the penny.  13 billion pennies are produced by the U.S. Mint every year.  The average penny lasts 25 years.  The Lincoln penny was the first cent on which the words "In God We Trust“ were printed. Source:

2  The Jefferson nickel was introduced in 1938 and is still being produced today.  Thomas Jefferson is on the front of the dime; and his home, Monticello, is on the back.  The nickel is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel alloy.  Nickels made during WWII did not contain any nickel alloy. Source:

3  The composition of the outer layer of the dime is 25% silver and 75% copper, with pure copper in the middle.  Franklin Roosevelt is on the front of the dime.  On the back of the dime is:  A torch, which represents liberty;  An olive branch, which represents peace;  And an oak leaf, which represents strength and independence.  The word “dime” comes from the French word “disme,” which means 1/10. Sources:

4  The composition of the quarter is 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel.  Washington did not appear on the quarter until  The US quarter is often referred to as “two bits” because Spanish Milled dollars would be divided into eight pieces to be used in small transactions. Each “bit” equals 12½ cents; so a quarter equals “two bits.”  As of 1997, there were 1,084,680,000 quarters in circulation (with a value of $271,170,000). Sources:
