NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 Presentation Australian activities AUKEGGS collaboration International connections

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 AODCJF Update The Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility (AODCJF) is a whole-of-government approach to ocean data management Six Australian Government marine agencies: –Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) –Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) –Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) –CSIRO Marine Research (CMR) –Geoscience Australia (GA) –RAN Directorate of Oceanography & Meteorology

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 AODCJF Update Progress –Signing of CHA in progress –Expected to be officially established by October 05 –Technical Committee established –Project BlueNet funded

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 BlueNet $3.5m over next two years Provide a distributed archiving facility to support long term curation of data from researchers Build infrastructure to enable discovery, access and online integration of marine data

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 Technical Committee Technical working groups have also been established to investigate metadata standards, netCDF interoperability and symbology services.

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 Metadata working group Developed a community metadata profile of ISO19115 –compliant with Aust. Government profile Developed vocabularies to describe metadata registered in the marine catalogue –Science keywords (subset of GCMD) –Sea area names (IHB) –Collection methods –Service metadata

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 Metadata Tool The AODCJF agencies developing a metadata entry tool –web-based data entry tool will support the marine profile of ISO19115 XML export capability will produce ISO19115 compliant files. Planned for release by end 2005.

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 AUKEGGS collaboration Visit to UK July 2005 Purpose of visit –Discuss metadata profile harmonisation –Discuss vocabulary requirements for discovery metadata –Identify possible areas for collaboration Discussions with BODC, BADC, CCLRC e- Science, Met Office

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 Main Results Metadata profile –Community metadata profile to be disseminated to NDG –NDG to provide comment on suitability for NDG discovery metadata

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 Main Results Vocabularies –BODC and AODCJF to use GCMD parameter keywords for discovery metadata –BODC and AODCJF to use IHB sea area names Publish as a web service

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 International connections Marine Metadata Interoperability (MMI) project –Forum for dissemination –Domain vocabulary workshop, August 2005 –Agreed to establish a repository for domain vocabularies

NESC Worshop – 07 September 2005 International connections Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) –IODE programme has metadata committee –Tasked with collaborating with national and international initiatives to recommend a marine profile of ISO19115 –Develop relvant vocabularies
