DCP Command Status Oct 2009

DCP Command Update Phase 2 SBIR completed in June Successful Tests conducted on both GOES East and GOES 14 Satellites. Release of RF and Framing Technical Details have been done to enable User and GOES Community Review as well as permitting the development of their own receiving platforms. See Sutron’s website under downloads for DCP Command. Funding for Phase 1 Uplink almost complete. Begin on Phase 1 Uplink with completion by late Spring 2010.

Performance Bench testing with noise sources gave the following performance. This showed that the system performs as designed and expected on a simulated link. What was needed next was to run live satellite tests that would add in real world contributions of the satellite and other factors.

Cont’d Performance over the Satellite. A quick check over the satellite was done and preliminary data showed that the system performed well over the satellite with some performance drop (around 1.25 dB) as expected due to the satellite and other contributions such as the above interfering signals. Over the next several weeks, more detailed testing will be done to quantify the performance.

What's Next Deliver Phase 1 uplink in late spring Run detailed over the air Satellite Testing. A Signal Generator was installed several days ago to permit testing of the link. Plan to test over current East and West satellites and the GOES 14 (while available) to compare the different transponders.

Purpose of ‘Phase 1’ Uplink System The Main purpose of the ‘Phase 1’ uplink system is to allow Key Users (STIWG funding partners) to get hands on experience with the operation and performance of DCP Command. Help build interest in the user community to request NESDIS to fast track an operational DCP Command system.

Funding for ‘Preliminary’ System Currently the following STWIG members have either placed a PO or have committed (in some way) to the preliminary test system: NOS USGS USACE USBR NDBC NESDIS

Discussions on Receiver Serial Port Definition Following the last TWG meeting, manufacturers were invited to participate in discussion regarding a ‘recommended’ port connector on the receiver. Discussions led to retain a DB-9 connector with DCE configuration.

HOW TO ACCELERATE DCP COMMAND SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT Implement the ‘Phase 1’ uplink and get STIWG users convinced and excited about DCP Command. Encourage NESDIS to begin Operational Command Uplink System. Encourage other vendors to develop receivers to operate on DCP Command.
