New Protocols in Professionalism: RCR Compliance Training Mike Frunzi, Steffen Jockusch, Jeffrey Lancaster, Arun Sundaresan January 12,

The National Science Foundation has established a new training requirement in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) for students and postdocs supported by NSF projects. The new requirement applies to all undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who are funded by NSF projects submitted (and subsequently awarded) on or after January 4, 2010, including competitive renewals. The requirement does not apply retroactively to students and postdocs funded on projects submitted before January 4, The new regulations implement provisions of the America COMPETES Act. On-line - Through Rascal, individuals can access an on-line course created and maintained by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI), a nationally-recognized source for research-related training. Learners are required to complete up to nine RCR modules:◦Research Misconduct◦Conflicts of Interest◦Publication Practices and Responsible Authorship◦Data Acquisition, Management, Sharing and Ownership◦Mentor/Trainee Responsibilities◦Peer Review◦Collaborative Science◦Human Subjects Protection◦Working with Animal Subjects (biomedical researchers only)Rascal Established Columbia Courses Departmental Offerings Principal Investigators will be responsible for assuring that all postdocs, graduate students and undergraduates who are funded by their NSF projects submitted (and subsequently awarded) on or after January 4, 2010, complete RCR training. The Office of Research Compliance and Training will coordinate the collection and maintenance of compliance information, including identification of affected individuals, collection of training completion data, and reporting to PIs and DAs.
