Basic Mechanical Functions Linking Function Guiding Function
Complex Mechanical Functions Motion Transmission Motion Transformation
DEFINITIONS: System: A set of components that share the same function. Motion transmission: Transmitting motion from one part to another without modifying the nature of the motion. Motion transformation: Relaying motion from one part to another while at the same time, MODIFYING (transforming) the nature of the motion.
(At least) 1 Driven Component (Possibly) 1 or more Intermediates All systems contain A driver (At least) 1 Driven Component (Possibly) 1 or more Intermediates Refer to page 390 in textbook
Components DRIVER: Recieves the power required to set the system in motion. DRIVEN: Recieves the motion of the driver and transmits it to another part. INTERMEDIATE: Located between the driver and the driven. May or may not be present in a system.
Motion Transmission 5 types: Transmitting motion from one part to another without modifying the nature of the motion. The driver and the driven perform the same motion 5 types: Friction gear system Simple gear system Pulley & belt system Chain & sprocket system Worm & worm gear system
Friction Gear System Transmits rotational motion between two or more nearby parts. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has two or more wheels without teeth that roll together.
Simple Gear System http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/gears1.htm Transmits rotational motion between two or more nearby parts. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has two or more gears that come in contact and mesh together.
Pulley & Belt Transmits rotational motion between parts that are relatively far apart from each other. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: A belt slide is on two or more wheels (pulleys). The pulleys must have a smooth surface for the belt not to break. http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/pulley1.htm
Chain & Sprocket Transmits rotational motion between parts that are relatively far apart from each other. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has two (or more) sprockets (gear wheels) that do not touch, plus a chain. http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/chain1.htm
Worm & Worm Gear http://www.technologystudent.com/gears1/worm1.htm Transmits rotational motion to non-parallel parts that are close to one another. Worm Worm gear COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has a worm and a worm gear; the teeth of each component slide into each other.
Motion Transformation
Motion Transformation: -Transforms the nature of the motion as it is relayed from one part to another. The driver and driven component do NOT have the same motion.
Motion Transformation: We’ll be looking at 4 system types: Slider-crank Rack & pinion Cam followers Screw gear
Slider-Crank FUNCTION: Transforms a rotational motion intro translational OR translational into rotational. COMPONENTS: Has a connecting rod and a crank. A crank is a part to which rotational motion can be applied. The rod is the INTERMEDIATE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T831-i3ShX8
Rack & Pinion FUNCTION: Rotational Translation (or vice versa) COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has a rack (rod with teeth) and a pinion (gear wheel). The teeth of the components mesh.
CAM & Follower FUNCTION: Rotational motion Translation motion. COMPONENTS & OPERATION: Has a cam (irregular shaped disc) and a follower (the rod). When the cam turns, the follower makes back-and-forth movement.
Screw Gear FUNCTION: Rotational motion Translation motion. (or vice versa) COMPONENTS & OPERATION: At least one screw and one nut.
