Submission November 2010 doc.: IEEE /1236r0 Enhancements to Enablement Procedure Slide 1 Santosh Abraham, Qualcomm Incorporated Date: Authors:

Submission November 2010 doc.: IEEE /1236r0 Contact Verification Signal Motivation: FCC in its latest Order (10-174) requires: –Every 60 sec, a mode I device must obtain over-the-air an encoded contact verification signal (CVS) that validates that mode I device is within reception range of enabling (mode II/fixed) device –Current af D0.06 signaling doesn’t meet the above requirement Current design proposes ‘list of available channels’ sent unencrypted in a Beacon which is not allowed by FCC. Design of CVS: –Information element that contains a Map Identifier. White Space Map Identifier Information Element (WSMIIE). Advantages of the Designed CVS –Broadcast over the air (Required) –Encoded: Enabled STAs can verify if the list of available channels they have is still valid while those not enabled can not obtain that list Broadcasting WSM is not allowed –Has a small overhead. Transmitting the entire white space map will incur high overhead. Slide 2 Qualcomm Incorporated

Submission November 2010 doc.: IEEE /1236r0 Design of Contact Verification Signal Contact Verification Signaling is performed using an information element that carries a White Space Map ID (WSMIIE) –The WSMIIE may be carried in the beacon or in a broadcast/multicast Management frame. WSMIIE has following structure: –Information Element Consists of Element ID: Identifies that it is a contact verification signal MAP ID: Has the White Space Map ID (as defined af1.1 in TGaf Draft 0.05) of the currently valid White Space Map A dependent STA matches the MAP ID in WSMIIE to the MAP ID received during enablement –If the MAP ID has not changed, the STA can continue using the channel –If the MAP ID has changed, then STA shall either Restart enablement (using existing enablement procedures) or Request a new White Space Map to check if the channel it is using is still available Slide 3 Qualcomm Incorporated

Submission November 2010 doc.: IEEE /1236r0 CVS with BIP WSMIIE may be sent in a robust broadcast/multicast management frame that includes broadcast integrity protection (BIP: w) –Ensures that receiver of the WSMIIE can verify that the transmitter of the WSMIIE is indeed the STA that provided the enablement. Slide 4 Qualcomm Incorporated WSMIIE

Submission November 2010 doc.: IEEE /1236r0 Recovery Procedure when WSMIIE Map ID changes Motivating Scenario: –STA1 has not been de-enabled, however current map version in the WSMIIE of the beacon has changed. –Wasteful for STA1 to restart enablement procedure if the channel it uses has not changed its status. Requirement: –Signaling that allows STA1 to obtain the new white space MAP and check if the channel it is operating on is still valid. Proposal: –Use RLQP messaging to retrieve this new white space map. Slide 5 Qualcomm Incorporated

Submission November 2010 doc.: IEEE /1236r0 Message Format for WSM Request WSM Request RLQP IE sent by STA when the WSMIIE in the beacon or broadcast management frame indicates a new WSM ID Field Settings: –Info ID is set to “request for new WSM” - (TBD) –Enablement Identifier: Set to the value received when STA was enabled Possible response Message from Enabling STA –De-enablement message. –A response message with the new WSM. Protected dual of the RLQP action frame may be used if the message is to be sent with encryption Slide 7 Qualcomm Incorporated

Submission November 2010 doc.: IEEE /1236r0 Response Message to WSM Request RLQP IE used to respond to a WSM Request. Fields –Info ID code is set to “response to WSM retriever” (TBD) –Enablement identifier set to the value obtained during last enablement Enablement identifier allows the enabler to verify that the STA is indeed enabled and was enabled by the said enabling STA before it sends a new white space map More efficient than FCC Id verification –WSM: WSM shall contain current channel reported by STA if available. STA Operation –WSM included in the Response message contains latest Map ID to be used for contact verification –STA may switch channels to channels indicated as available in WSM or change power levels according to the power indicated in the WSM Protected dual of the RLQP action frame may be used if the message is to be sent with encryption.
