Third Grade Active Lessons Maria, Carrie, Alisha, and Rebecca

Did you know? ●73% of Virginia middle schoolers do not meet the 60 minute requirement of daily physical activity. ●If teachers begin to incorporate physical activity into their daily lessons, this will potentially motivate children to become more active outside of school while also helping decrease obesity. ●Physical activity increases alertness, motivation, and attention.

Fit4Kids Program Fit4Kids is a health and physical education initiative that has impacted several thousand elementary aged children in the Greater Richmond area since its start in schools three years ago. With a team of recess, nutrition, and wellness experts the program has created a variety of programs that have become incorporated into Richmond schools through active lessons, lessons outside in gardens, and showing students healthier food options. These initiatives have been put into place with the hopes that the students will be able to implement what they learn in the classroom into their daily lives outside of school.

Goal of the Program Active Lessons: Incorporating movement and physical activity into curriculum based lessons in order to reduce the amount of sedentary time students face throughout their school day. Importance of Active Lessons: Active Lessons allow for students to have the chance to exercise during the day, which will help them learn and retain information at a faster pace and be more focused on the tasks presented to them. Students are also more likely to pay better attention to the lesson the teacher is presenting if they are able to do an activity where they can move around while still learning. Active Lessons will ultimately implement a healthy lifestyle in the classroom.

Who Would Benefit? ●The CDC conducted research stating that “ physical activity can have an impact on cognitive skills, attitudes and academic behavior, all of which are important components of improved academic performance.” ●Physical activity decreases blood pressure, cholesterol, anxiety, stress and obesity, while increasing self- esteem, attention, focus, skill and motor development ●Physical activity not only benefits students but also the teacher leading the activity.

Curriculum Used: Fit 4 Kids Year at a Glance: 1st Nine Weeks: Each subject will implement one active lesson during the first quarter, totalling 4 active lessons for the students to participate in for the first quarter. 2nd Nine Weeks: Each subject will implement two active lessons during the second quarter, totalling 8 active lessons for the students to participate in for the second quarter. 3rd Nine Weeks: Each subject will implement 4 active lessons during the third quarter, totalling 16 active lessons for the students to participate in during the third quarter. 4th Nine Weeks: Each subject will be required to implement 5 active lessons during the fourth quarter, totalling 20 active lessons for the fourth quarter. **This would be a minimum requirement for teachers** Year at a Glance

Introduction for the Students: Hold a short quiz and then have the students stand up and have a brain break with an interactive video to get the students up and moving. Following the brain break have the students take the quiz again and ask them if they felt the quiz was easier after they had a chance to get up and get their body and brain going. Then discuss with them how the class was going to start having some fun and active lessons where they were going to get the chance to learn through active lessons that incorporated games and exercise into them, so that they won’t be working at their desks every day. Active Lessons Language Arts: Word Workout ●SOL 3.4 ●Students will apply previously learned knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, and affixes to identify vocabulary words Math: Place Value Musical Chairs ●SOL 3.1,3.2, 3.3 ●The students will practice place value and the understanding of numbers being greater than, less than, or equal to another through the incorporation of musical chairs. The student will also practice improper and simplified fractions, as well as multiplication and division word problems. Science: Food Chain Relay ●SOL 3.5 ●Students will identify the feeding relationships in a food chain and sequence the order in the chain. They will also distinguish the producer, consumer, decomposer, herbivore, carnivore and omnivore after sequencing the food chain. Social Studies: Map Relay ●SOL 3.5 ●On a map, students will locate the position of the 7 continents, 5 oceans, prime meridian, and equator. They will also locate the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western hemispheres, and will identify which continents France, Spain, England and the United States are located.
