What is RDA? Resource Description and Access New cataloging code that replaces AACR2 Based on FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) and FRAD (Functional Requirements for Authority Records)

RDA timeline, abridged edition Work on “AACR3” starts (2004) “AACR3” becomes RDA (2005) RDA gets reorganized (2007) Full draft released (November 2008) Release of RDA Toolkit (June 2010) Test records created (October 1-December 31, 2010) Evaluation period (January 1-March 31, 2011)

RDA timeline, continued Library of Congress announces intent to implement RDA (June 2012) Official implementation by LC (March 31, 2013)

Why do we need RDA, again? MARC-independent Digital environment/proliferation of formats More focus on relationships Need for a code that will work with the Web

How is RDA different from AACR2? Organization Based on FRBR concepts Representation principle Fewer abbreviations More data in new MARC fields

Impact on technical services “Learning curve”/extra time to create or edit records Training issues Money issues

“Learning curve” issues New vocabulary New tools (RDA toolkit) New MARC fields 33x, 34x, 38x Changed MARC fields 264 vs. 260

AACR2 record (OCLC) GMD 260 field

RDA record (OCLC) 264 fields Fewer abbreviations 33x and 34x fields No GMD

Training issues Availability Convenience Affordability

Financial considerations Cost of training Cost of RDA toolkit Online vs. print vs. “winging it” Cost of (temporarily) lower productivity

Impact on public services No more GMD (replaced with 33x fields) Fewer abbreviations End of the “rule of three” = more access points Relationship designators Future: more relationships, more links = better retrieval User experience vs. RDA “core” elements

AACR2 record (Mango*) abbreviations No relator terms *State University System OPAC

RDA record (Mango) Relator terms Spelled out words

Do we have to start using RDA? Short answer: Not just yet, but soon OCLC isn’t requiring that new records use RDA However, existing records can be changed from AACR2 to RDA (but not the other way around) Final date for BIBCO* and CONSER** AACR2 records: December 31, 2014 *Monographic Bibliographic Record Cooperative Program **Cooperative Online Serials Program

Should we start using RDA? New records from LC and PCC* libraries now use RDA Hybrid records appearing on OCLC Can your ILS and OPAC handle RDA? New MARC fields Display issues You don’t need to be an RDA expert to start using it *Program for Cooperative Cataloging
