The process by which existing rock is changed by heat and pressure is called metamorphism Original sedimentary or igneous rock is known as parent rock.
All Metamorphic Rock starts off as Igneous or Sedimentary Rock  Geologists are always interested in what kind of rock a metamorphic rock used to be.

 Deep underground, at the base of mountains, in zones radiating from intrusions of magma underground, on glaciated terrain after transportation by ice, or on the surface of eroded mountains.

 A metamorphic rock is formed through heat or pressure. This type of rock was one that developed from sedimentary or igneous that has undergone a transformation from heat or pressure.

 Metamorphic rocks are used for buildings, weapons, tools. Marble is used for interior walls and floors where there is less traffic (such as bathrooms) because it is soft.  Slate is used for roof tiles.
