The 1920s by: Nicole Smith During the 1920s, the United States became more urban, and new technology changed the way people live.

Technology Changes Lives Electricity Automobiles Appliances Lighting Vacations Farmers could travel to urban areas

A Changing Society New kinds of music, art, and literature became popular in the 1920s. Called the “Roaring Twenties” because people felt as if life was “roaring” forward like a speeding car. Women and Men drove cars. Women known as flappers cut their hair short and wore knee length skirts. Women even began flying airplanes. 19 th Amendment was ratified which gave women the right to vote.

What were two ways women’s lives changed during the 1920s? 1.Women spent less time on household chores. 2.Women went to college. 3.Women worked outside their homes. 4.Women got the right to vote.

Jazz and the Harlem Renaissance People listened to Jazz on the radio and went to Jazz clubs. New type of music called Jazz. Jazz was influenced by many cultures, but began among African Americans. One of the famous places for Jazz was Harlem, NY.

New Kinds of Entertainment Radio broadcasts- shows, commercials, news reports, and sporting events Warren Harding was announced President over a radio broadcast. Movies also became popular. Hollywood produced about 700 movies per year first movie with sound called “talkie”

Problems of the 1920s Discrimination and crime were problems in the 1920s. Women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, and Immigrants were facing discrimination. KKK spread hatred against immigrants, African Americans, Jewish people, and Catholics. The KKK had as many as 5 million members by the mid 1920s. 18 th Amendment-prohibition of alcohol was causing problems as well.

18 th Amendment : ratified 1919 Made the selling and drinking of alcoholic beverages against the law. This caused criminals to break the law by making and selling the alcohol. This cause crime rates to increase, and violence to increase in cities. Prohibition was repealed, or ended, with the 21 st Amendment in 1933.

More Problems Farmers also struggled in the 1920s. After WWI the demand of crops decreased and farm prices dropped. Many farmers could not earn enough to pay back the money they borrowed. Some were forced to sell their farms and look for other kinds of work.
