Summary Boys crash land on island No surviving adults Try to establish leadership – Ralph with conch Ralph, Jack, & Simon look to see if they are on an island Exclude Piggy – his job is take names

Characters Ralph – fair hair, excited – no grown-ups, 12, boxer-like body, dad in Navy, becomes leader (chief) Piggy – fat, glasses, asthma, needs adults “my auntie –,” dad is dead Sam & Eric – twins Jack Merridew – tall, thin, bony, red hair, freckles, in charge of choir (hunters) Simon – skinny, vivid little boy, black straight hair

Symbols Conch: order, power (like the megaphone the grownups used) Specs (glasses): intelligence Hooded choir boys – together, dark creature, black cloaks: controlled evil Scar: destruction of perfection, man’s influence

Irony Piggy says, “After all, we’re not savages…” (42). Later Ralph is described as savage (44).

Important Quotations “My auntie –” p. 11, 13, etc. Piggy relies on adults “I was going to…I was choosing a place. Next time-!” (31). Foreshadows no mercy, Jack’s future actions “We don’t want you [Piggy]” said Jack (24). foreshadows intelligence will not last
