3 Ralph His name means “counsel”. His father is in the Navy.
He is voted “Chief”. He lacks the charisma, but he has the conch. He tries to keep everyone organized by establishing rules. He represents DEMOCRACY.

4 Jack His name means “supplanter; usurper”.
He seeks a position of leadership. He is mean and overly authoritative. Head choir boy who can sing “C sharp”. Refers to his choir boys as HUNTERS. He will come to represent DICTATORSHIP.

5 Piggy His name means...well...he is “piggy”.
His eyeglasses are vital to their survival. He has asthma. (physically weak) Has no influence or power though he has many solid, realistic ideas. He is a social outcast on and off the island. He represents INTELLECT.

6 Simon His name means “one who hears”.
He is the choir boy who faints in the beginning of the novel. He is timid, and so has difficulty conveying his ideas. He is the only one who truly understands “the truth”. He represents SPIRITUALITY.

7 Roger His name means “spear-bearer”. He is described as “the dark one”. He appears timid/shy/quiet. He represents SAVAGERY.
