Iroquois Notes

Confederacy: Consisted of 5 Tribes: S eneca C ayuga O nondaga O neida M ohawk

A. The first letters of the tribes spell SCOOM when read from West to East.

B. Each tribe has a body of water named after it in New York. Let’s look at a Map…

Culture Lived in villages with families. Villages moved about every 10 years. Many villages had a fence of pointed logs surrounding them.

Longhouse Iroquois lived in large houses feet long, 20 feet wide, and feet high. Several families live in a long house. Fires are built in a row down the middle.

Work Women did the farming. Men did the hunting. Children helped in all of the work.

Women owned the property and were in charge of discipline. When men married they went to live in the women’s longhouse. Men served on the council which made decisions for the tribe.

Diet A major crop for the Iroquois was corn. They ground up kernels to make flour for bread. Other foods were meat, fish, berries, grapes, nuts, and fruits.
