Purpose of DSpace Typically used as an institutional repository for scholarly output. Initially designed for MIT As faculty and researchers develop research materials and publications in increasingly complex digital formats, there is a need to collect, preserve, index and distribute them. DSpace aims to provide a solution to manage these scholarly output in a professionally maintained repository to give them greater visibility and accessibility over time. History of DSpace 2002 Hold the first user group meeting - DSpace Federation was formed by a group of interested institutions. HP and MIT jointly formed the DSpace Foundation to provided leadership and support The first public version was released after its introduction as a new service of the MIT Libraries. The DSpace Foundation ceased operation. DuraSpace took over supporting the DSpace project Timeline 2000 The project was initiated as a dynamic digital repository for the intellectual output of research institutions by MIT and HP Labs.
