When & Where Brownies First Appeared Brownies first appeared at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. The first brownie recipe was published in 1896.

Who was responsible for the invention/creation of brownies? The legend behind the invention of brownies is the a housewife in Maine was baking a chocolate cake and it fell on the floor. Instead of throwing it away, she cut the collapsed caked into small squares and served it. The two oldest recipes for brownies come from Fannie Merrit Farmer and Bertha Palmer.

More Legends It is also legend that Bertha Palmer was asked to make a dessert that was smaller than a cake and something that could easily be put into boxed lunches.

Evolution of Brownies The oldest recipes for brownies call for the use of molasses instead of chocolate. They also always had some sort of peanut or walnut on them. That is a picture of brownies made with molasses.

Interesting, Historical or Important Facts Original brownies had no leavening, except for one egg and a little flour, but the butter and melted chocolate made them softer than most cookies. Brownies can be made with white chocolate. They are called Blondies.
