Welcome to Math 6 Understanding Integers

Connector: We have studied all about the number system, including different ways to express a number and how to perform the basic arithmetic operations on numbers. Now…

Connector: We will broaden our understanding of the number system. Today we will introduce a new concept: Integers.

KEY VOCABULARY FOR THIS LESSON Integers- are the set of all whole numbers and their opposites. Positive Integers- are greater than 0. Negative Integers- are less than 0.

KEY VOCABULARY FOR THIS LESSON Absolute Value- of an integer is its distance from 0. The absolute value of an integer is always positive. The symbol for absolute value is..

OBJECTIVE: Each student will: 1.Identify and graph integers, 2.Find opposites, 3.Define absolute value and 4.Find the absolute value of an integer.

Whole numbers greater than zero are called positive integers. These numbers are to the right of zero on the number line. Whole numbers less than zero are called negative integers. These numbers are to the left of zero on the number line.

The integer zero is neutral. It is neither positive nor negative.

The sign of an integer is either positive ( + ) or negative ( - ), except zero, which has no sign.

Two integers are opposites if they are each the same distance away from zero, but on opposite sides of the number line. One will have a positive sign, the other a negative sign.

In the number line above, + 3 and - 3 are labeled as opposites.

Absolute Value means how far a number is from zero. That’s why -7 and 7 have the same absolute value.

Guided Practice Graph integers on a number line.

Name a positive or negative number to represent each situation. 1.When the Swanton Bulldogs football team passed the football, they gained 25 yards. (Write an integer to represent this situation.) 2.Saving $ feet below sea level

1.What is the opposite of –6? 2.What is the absolute value of –12?

CONCLUSION Integers are not made up numbers. They are numbers from real life. Just ask Ernest Shackleton, who was stranded for more than a year in Antarctica.

Assignments Complete the worksheet on integers attached to this lesson.
