 Dept of Occupational Safety & Health is responsible for enforcing the workplace safety laws.  A safety culture is one which values workers and recognises their importance to the success of the organisation.

 The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act) was passed to prevent workers from being killed or seriously harmed at work.  This law created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which sets and enforces protective workplace safety and health standards.  OSHA also provides information, training, and assistance to employers and workers.

1. Working conditions that do not pose a risk of serious harm. 2. Receive information and training (in a language workers can understand) about chemical and other hazards, methods to prevent harm, and OSHA standards that apply to their workplace. 3. Review records of work-related injuries and illnesses.

4. Get copies of test results done to find and measure hazards in the workplace. 5. File a complaint asking OSHA to inspect their workplace if they believe there is a serious hazard or that their employer is not following OSHA rules. When requested, OSHA will keep all identities confidential. 6. Use their rights under the law without retaliation or discrimination.

 Accidents decrease productivity & increase costs.  Employers need to take continuous steps to ensure they are complying with safety laws.  Safety policies need to be drafted.

 Sexual harrassment  Violence at work ◦ Includes attempted physical harm & bullying.

 Wellness programmes  Stress management  Reducing drugs and alcohol related problems  Ergonomics

 Lack of awareness/ knowledge  Lack of commitment  Ignorance  Unethical work practices/ individuals  Cost factors

KUALA LUMPUR: The operator of 24-hour convenience store KK Mart is seeing a 400% increase in robberies at its outlets nationwide – an average of one outlet robbed every 31 hours. General manager Hooi Weng Kheong said 56 robberies in 82 of their outlets were recorded last year. After the chain expanded to 127 outlets this year, the number of cases rose to 217 as of Dec 17. Hooi describes the figure as “alarming and scary” as KK mart has incurred losses of over a million ringgit since “Even more terrifying is the danger to our 1,300 staff and customers as the robbers were usually armed,” he said at a press conference held at Wisma KK in Desa Petaling yesterday. Over the past four years, at least 20 KK Mart employees had suffered injuries during such robberies. Three have been hospitalised for serious wounds.
