Welding Students will be able to know and understand the history of welding and what welding is. This will be accomplished by researching 3 processes.

History of welding Russian scientist Vasily Petrov discovered the electric arc in 1802 From this many other forms, including current forms, have been born including: Carbon arc welding Alternating current welding Resistance welding Oxyfuel welding

History of welding Until the end of the 19th century, the only welding process was forge welding Arc welding and Oxyfuel welding were among the first processes to develop late in the century, and resistance (spot and seam) welding followed soon after. be.com/watch?v= cOAdEIQKZDs

History of welding World War I and II caused a major surge in the use of welding processes, with the various military powers attempting to determine which of the several new welding processes would be best.

Interesting Facts Welding was used in the construction of the iron pillar in Delhi India, erected about 310 AD and weighing 5.4 metric tons, or 6 tons First plastic made car was made using ultrasonic welding h?v=KTe8FBNAREA

What is welding? The fusion of 2 or more pieces of metal together using heat.

How is it done? Melting the work pieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool). Pressure sometimes used in conjunction with heat, or by itself, to produce the weld.

Where can welding be done? While often an industrial process, welding can be done in many different environments, including open air, underwater and in outer space.

What is similar to welding? Soldering and brazing Melting a lower- melting-point material between the work pieces to form a bond between them, without melting the work pieces.

Different Welding Processes Forge Welding Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Arc Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) Oxyfuel Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) MIG Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) TIG Plasma Arc Welding Submerged Arc Welding (underwater) Resistance Welding Spot Welding and Seam Welding Ultrasonic Welding Explosion Welding

Questions???

Assignment You will research 3 different welding processes of your choice You need to find out the following information for each welding process….. What is the name of your process When it was invented or started How is your process used/done What is the equipment used in your process You will have time to work on it on Tuesday
