GLOBALIZATION N.P.

GLOBALIZATION: from New Forces affecting Tourism Stephen J Page It is a process associated with the growth of large international companies and corporations which control various forms of economic development and production internationally […] making goods and delivering services at a lower cost, using low overheads and cheap labour in developing countries. N.P.

GLOBALIZATION and TOURISM Example in Tourism: large multinational hotel chains and tour operators use developing countries and destinations as the basis for their tourist product. N.P.

GLOBALIZATION Globalization as synonym for: -the pursuit of classical liberal (or free market) policies in the world economy (i.e. economic liberalization); -the growing dominance of Western (or even American) forms of political, economic and cultural life (Westernization or Americanization); -the proliferation of new information technologies (the internet revolution). N.P.

VIEWS about GLOBALIZATION 1) contemporary analysts associate it with deterritorialization, i.e.: a growing variety of social activities takes place irrespective of a geographical location of participants; 2) globalization as the growth of social N.P. interconnectedness across geographical and political boundaries (e.g. wikipedia as an example of deterritorialized social space, since it allows for an exchange of ideas in cyberspace);

VIEWS about GLOBALIZATION 3) Globalization must also include reference to speed or velocity of social activities. Both interconnectedness and deterritorialization are linked to the acceleration of crucial forms of social activity. The proliferation of high speed transportation, communication and information technologies constitutes the most immediate source for the blurring of geographical and territorial boundaries. N.P.

VIEWS about GLOBALIZATION 4) Globalization should be perceived as a multi-pronged process since deterritorialization, social interconnectedness and acceleration manifest themselves in many different (economic, political and cultural) arenas of social life. N.P.

GLOBALIZATION Discussion: provide your personal ideas about the phonomenon of globalization: - advantages and drawbacks; - solutions to improve it. N.P.
