When Opposition Strikes November 29

Admit it, now … What is something you’ve done that required you to muster up a great deal of courage? Facing opposition takes a great deal of courage. – Today we look at opposition faced by the early church – Believers will have the boldness to face any opposition because God is in charge

Listen for indecision. Acts 4:18-21 (NIV) Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God.

Listen for indecision. 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." 21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.

Do Not Be Silenced After the Sanhedrin consulted together, what action did they take against the apostles? What was the apostles’ reply to the judgment handed down by the council? How was the Sanhedrin indecisive in taking action against Peter and John? In our society, when should Christian leaders stand up to political and religious groups?

Do Not Be Silenced What are some of the risks in telling others about Christ? How can you be prepared to stand up for Christ when your beliefs are challenged? Look up 2 Timothy 4:2 in different translations (HCSB) Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching. What does Paul suggest about our witness?

Listen for confidence expressed. Acts 4:23-28 (NIV) On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit

Listen for confidence expressed. through the mouth of your servant, our father David: "'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. 27 Indeed

Listen for confidence expressed. and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.

Confidence in Sovereign God Where did Peter and John do after they were released by the Sanhedrin? How did the believers respond to the apostles’ report? Why was it important for them to return to their own people? Why didn’t they just go back to preaching?

Confidence in Sovereign God  It is important that church members (the different members of the Body of Christ) realize the interdependence on one another  Just like when a physical body needs the hands which need the feet which need the eyes and ears

Confidence in Sovereign God How did they address God? What theological views are expressed in this passage? Why would these truths be vital to our prayers? In the prayer, how did the believers express their view of the persecution they faced?

Listen for their prayer request. Acts 4:29-31 (NIV) Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus." 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Ask God for Boldness What did the Christians ask God to do? Why did they desire boldness? Why did the disciples request miracles? What kind of miracles should we be praying for in people’s lives today?

Ask God for Boldness I think they should have prayed to remove the threat of the Sanhedrin. They could ask God to strike them down! Agree?Disagree?

Ask God for Boldness What happened after they prayed? What was God’s response to their prayers? What would be evidences today that a person is filled with the Holy Spirit?

Application Be a supportive influence in your local church – Don’t just show up to worship and to have your own needs met – Be determined to encourage others toward love and good works

Application Submit to God each day – Begin each day this week by expressing your submission to and trust in God – Pray less about your specific needs – Pray more about your desire to follow and obey God as your Lord

Application Pray for boldness to share your faith – Consider who God has placed in your life who is hardened against the gospel – Don’t give in to fear – Don’t give up on that person … pray for spiritual boldness
