Partner Talk: Take 2 minutes to discuss the 2 questions below How would you define an instructional framework? How familiar are you with instructional frameworks? (Scale of 1-5, 5 being very familiar). 02/04/11April 19, 2010 WEBINAR

What is an instructional framework? An instructional framework identifies aspects of teaching that are research-based as promoting and improving student learning E.G. Instruction: Communicating with students the expectations for learning (a.k.a. learning targets)

Instructional Framework continued A framework also utilizes rubrics to identify at least four tiers of effectiveness in these research- based instructional methods How effectively does a teacher use learning targets? Unsatisfactory: Teacher’s purpose in less or unit is unclear, Basic: Teacher attempts to explain the instructional purpose with limited success. Proficient: Teacher’s purpose for lesson or unit is clear, including where it is situated within broader learning. Distinguished: Teacher makes the purpose of the lesson or unit clear, including where it is situated within broader learning, linking that purpose to student interests.

The 3 approved frameworks for the State of Washington Charlotte Danielson’s “Enhancing Professional Practice” University of Washington’s Center for Educational Leadership 5 Dimensions of Teaching and learning Robert Marzano’s “Effective Supervision”

Challenges and opportunities Tight timeline Details, details, details, What type of evidence do we use (e.g. student data, other “artifacts” etc. How is a total score/rating determined? How do we train teachers/principals? This work is aligned to what we are already doing MAP data Great opportunity to foster continual professional growth model New evaluation models will help align our efforts (e.g. P.D., recruitment, etc.) 02/04/11April 19, 2010 WEBINAR
