Finance & Legislation Committee

F & L Committee’s Charge Committee Goals/Objectives (charge)  Under the direction of the Executive Board, provide for the detailed study and learning of State & Federal Finance and Legislative Issues including the implications for special education administration.  Recommend MAASE Position and Input Statements to the Executive Board and Legislative Action Committee.  Propose additions/deletions to the official MAASE Legislative Platform.  Establish and maintain a “MAASE Finance & Legislative Resource Center” on the MAASE Website.

Why Participate? Hear directly from OSE on:  Finance from a state and federal perspective as well as program accountability  Regular participants include: John Andrejack, Dianne Easterling, Sheryl Diamond, Nancy Rotarius, Joanne Winkleman  Yesterday’s meeting: Uniform Grant Guidance will be in place for grants starting in July. There will be additional focus on performance and outcomes as well as compliance. Guidance intended to protect from fraud, waste and abuse. The MDE will need to complete a risk assessment for all grant recipients prior to providing funding.  OSE reports are a regular part of the agenda, but the meeting is also a great opportunity to discuss specific questions in an informal, collaborative basis.

Get updates on MAASE Legislative Action  Role of LAC vs. F & L…  Yesterday’s meeting included discussion regarding:  MAASE participation in upcoming JCAR hearing  8:30 am tomorrow morning RM 402 Capitol Bldg   3rd grade Retention bill (HB 5111)*  Teacher Evaluation bill status (HB 5223)*  Update on status of MAASE platform and priorities for 2015

Why Participate? Get updates on professional learning related to finance and legislation:  MAASE Legislative Action Seminar (Spring 2015)  We have important information that lawmakers need.  We must be at the table where decisions are being made that impact the children in our schools.  Learn by doing and have the support of you colleagues in this process.

Why Participate? Get Updates on Association Partnerships such as:  CASE  Policy work underway re: IDEA and ESEA Reauthorization  MASA/MAISA  Early On Funding

How to Participate  Who – This is an open group Every MAASE member is welcome to attend  When – Each Tuesday of MAASE during lunch. Please come right at noon and get your seat. We will start with the OSE report by and typically break to go get our lunch at about 12:10-12:15.

How to Help  Agenda – suggestions for agenda topics are welcomed anytime by ing me  Looking for members willing to serve on an Ad Hoc Committee (please interest):  Help develop the Finance & Legislation Resource Center within the Wiki  Annual review of MAASE Legislative Platform with recommendations to LAC  Others as need/interest arises
