ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS 6 th Grade Advanced/Pre-IB Mathematics

Integers are all positive and negative whole numbers and zero.

A LITTLE POEM… SAME signs ADD and KEEP. DIFFERENT signs SUBTRACT. Then KEEP the sign of the BIGGER number and you will be exact. SAME signs ADD and KEEP. DIFFERENT signs SUBTRACT. Then KEEP the sign of the BIGGER number and you will be exact.

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE ADD…  A positive integer with a positive integer?  A negative integer with a negative integer?  A positive integer with a negative integer?

Answer the following problems on a separate piece of paper. Remember to show all of your work!

You can also think of it as “Change the sign and add a line.” 3 – 5 5 – (-7)
