Luke Jesus: The Son of Man Who Seeks and Saves Pick Up Your Cross and, Follow Me: The Three Duties of Discipleship Luke 9:23-27

Luke 9: Jesus Trains the 12 The Savior Sends the Twelve, vv. 1-11 Jesus sends (Apostles) the 12 throughout Israel Walk by faith – trust in Him daily, be a light for Him A Feast From the Savior, vv. 12-17 Jesus takes them to the wilderness Tests the 12 in their faith The 12 deliver the bread (teaching) Who is Jesus?, vv. 18-22 Wrong ideas of who Jesus is He is the Christ, Messiah, Anointed One Don’t tell anyone, because I’m going to suffer and die

Pick Up Your Cross, vv. 23- 27 The Context, v. 22 The Cross Carrying, v. 23 The Contrast, vv. 24-26 The Coming Kingdom’s Glory, v. 27

The Context, v. 22 “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.” Context, context, context… The Gospel – “good news” We are all sinners – “bad news” Romans 5:12; Galatians 3:22 Sin Death (separation from God) – “really bad news” Genesis 2:15-17; Romans 6:23a; Romans 3:23 Jesus paid the penalty for our sins – “good news” Romans 8:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24 We are saved from sin and death through faith... ALONE – “really good news” Romans 3:23-26; 4:1-4; 6:23; 8:1; Ephesians 2:8-9

The Context John’s audience John’s purpose John’s theme Unbelievers in the area of Ephesus John’s purpose Prove that Jesus is the Christ, John 20:30-31a John’s theme Salvation through faith alone, John 3:16-18; 5:24; 14:6; John 20:30-31 Luke’s audience A Gentile Believer, Luke 1:3 Luke’s purpose His audience would know the exact truth of what they had been taught, Luke 1:4 Luke’s theme (one of several) Discipleship – Sermon on the Plain, Luke 6:20-49; 9:23-27

The Cross Carrying, v. 23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” He was saying to them “all” All the disciples, the setting is Caesarea Philippi, Matthew 16:13 If anyone “wishes” – θελω thelo ESV (would) and KJV (will) not the most accurate BDAG – 1) to have a desire for something, wish to have, desire, want. 2) to have something in mind for one’s self, resolve, will, wish. Three imperatives (commands) required in order to be a disciple One requirement for justification, Gal 2:15-16… Gal 1:6-9 Deny self (John 3:25-30; Rom 8:12-17); pick up your cross DAILY (2 Cor 10:3-5) Follow me – present active imperative; flows from self-denial and picking up cross Cross is a Roman symbol of authority – must submit to be a disciple, Gal 2:20-21

The Contrast, vv. 24-25 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?” A – B – B – A structure, v. 24 If you are holding onto your own ideas about life, you will lose it (justification and sanctification). John 14:6; Luke 18:10-14 If you lose your own ideas about life (and embrace God’s), you will gain it (justification and sanctification). John 15:4-5 What does a man gain by living for self? Implied answer… NOTHING Applies to justification and sanctification; Hebrews 10:26-39 – judgment awaits!

The Contrast, v. 26 “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” Context, context, context The Son of Man is coming in His glory, and the glory of the Father, & angels The “Second Coming” – visible glory, from the Father, with angels, results in death Concerns Israel; Rev 19:11-19; Dan 7:13-14; Matt 25:31 The “Rapture” – in the air, taken to heaven, results in glorification Concerns the Church; 1 Thess 4:13-18; 1 Cor 15:50-57 Ashamed Church: Romans 1:16; 2 Tim 1:12 Israel: Matthew 25:31-46

The Coming Kingdom’s Glory, v. 27 “But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” I say to you truthfully A point of emphasis He cannot lie, Titus 1:2 Will not taste death Double emphasis – οὐ μη Until they see the Kingdom of God The resurrection? Pentecost? Destruction of Jerusalem? The Kingdom has begun? “Some” 3 Apostles will see Jesus in His glory in just a few short days…

Pick Up Your Cross, vv. 23- 27 The Context, v. 22 The Cross Carrying, v. 23 The Contrast, vv. 24-26 The Coming Kingdom’s Glory, v. 27
