Innovate. Engage. Empower Agenda Reading, Writing, and Talking about Writing LUNCH 11:30 ish Reading, Writing, and Talking about Writing

Innovate. Engage. Empower Begin and end on time. Stay focused on the work. Acknowledge challenges but don’t dwell. Everyone participates respectfully. Limited sidebar conversations, including electronic ones. When making decisions, silence equals consensus Others? Norms

Innovate. Engage. Empower District Initiatives Innovate : Using Writing in all courses to validate thinking. Engage : Strategies that allow students to read, talk and write during the entire school day to further their understanding through the use of the framework for intentional and targeted teaching. Empower : Strengthening PLCs by implementing a minimum of one hour weekly collaborative planning time in all schools for all instructional staff.

Innovate. Engage. Empower School District of Clay County Framework for Intentional and Targeted Teaching

Innovate. Engage. Empower Today’s Purpose Create a common understanding around the indicators of success on the new FSA Writing Rubric Collaboratively score OneClay Writes papers to increase understanding of expectations for 4 th grade writers

Innovate. Engage. Empower Team Consensus

Innovate. Engage. Empower Learning from others about Collaboration… Assessed beginning of the year student writing samples using September Clay Writes 4 th grade writing teachers met weekly to discuss writing skills students needed to improve and planned writing lessons. Teachers taught the same lessons to keep pace with each other. Creativity was sparked in both students and teachers We always had someone to rely on

Innovate. Engage. Empower Writing Standard LAFS.4.W.1.1Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. a. Introduce a topic clearly, state an opinion, and create a organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer’s purpose. b. Provide reasons that are supported by fact and details. c. Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g. for instance, in order to, in addition). d. Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented.

Innovate. Engage. Empower FS Writing Assessment… The stimulus will be presented along with a writing prompt that asks students to write an essay about the topic. The students will be required to synthesize information from the text sets and must cite specific evidence from the texts to support their ideas.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Unpacking the Rubric Examine the Rubric, focusing on the highest point total, not the minimum requirements. What do you notice?

Innovate. Engage. Empower “Norming” is Normal… Each person reads and assigns the sample a score. Each person shares their score with the group. The group records the scores on chart paper so readers see score discrepancies. Readers explain their rationale for their scores starting with discrepancies. Decide on score that everyone is comfortable with.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Let’s Try It… Read through the passages, the prompt, and the student response. INDIVIDUALLY, rate the 1 st student response by giving a score for each section of the rubric. Provide written rationale for your score.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Where are we collectively? Take the dots in the center of your table. Each person needs 4 dots. Place a dot on the number that represents your score for each section. Place a dot on the overall number that you rated the student paper.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Let’s Try It Again… INDIVIDUALLY, rate the 2 nd student response paper by giving a score for each section of the rubric. Provide written rationale for your score. Place a dot on the number that represents your score for each section. Place a dot on the overall number that you rated the student paper.

Innovate. Engage. Empower Partner Up… Choose one of your student papers. Score it and provide rationale for your score. Trade student papers with a partner. Do not share your score of the paper with your partner. Score partner’s paper. Discuss scores given and rationale. Come to consensus on a final score.

Innovate. Engage. Empower

How will the work we did today collaboratively inform your classroom practice? Chart your team’s responses. Be ready to share
