What Led to the Soviet Takeover Shortly after the Russian Revolution had ended, the Soviet Union had started providing aid and assistance to Afghanistan. The Afghan government had signed a treaty with the Soviets on December 1978, which allowed them to call Soviet forces for troops.

The Soviets weren't too eager to supply the Afghans and they’ve been hearing that Anim, the president of Afghanistan, was damaging Afghanistan. On December 1979 Soviet forces dressed in Afghan uniforms and killed the president of Afghanistan, Amin.
