Soviet Union Takeover By: Zayd Fattah Date: Block: 2nd

What Led to the Soviet Takeover Shortly after the Russian Revolution had ended, the Soviet Union had started providing aid and assistance to Afghanistan. The Afghan government had signed a treaty with the Soviets on December 1978, which allowed them to call Soviet forces for troops.

What Led to the Soviet Takeover The Afghan government requested troops from the Soviets to protect and assist them in battles. The Soviets weren't too eager to supply the Afghans and they’ve been hearing that Anim, the president of Afghanistan, was damaging Afghanistan. On December 1979 Soviet forces dressed in Afghan uniforms and killed the president of Afghanistan, Amin.

What Led to the Soviet Takeover In 1979, the Soviet forces seized control over Afghanistan. President Hafizullah Amin, who was overthrown and killed, was replaced by Barak Karmal.

How Long did the Communist Rule Last in Afghanistan The communist rule lasted in Afghanistan from 1979 to The Soviet leader who ruled Afghanistan for these seven years was Barak Karmal.

The Impact of the Soviet Takeover Among the People of Afghanistan The invasion had a devastating effect on the people of Afghanistan. The rural population assisted the Mujahedeen by feeding them and housing them. The Soviets tried to destroy the rural countryside by bombing the small villages destroying crops, villages, and killing millions.

The Impact of the Soviet Takeover Among the People of Afghanistan The bombing and land mines caused many refugees to flee the rural countryside. When the United States heard of what the Soviets were doing, they immediately gave millions of dollars worth of weapons and food to aid the Mujahedeen.

The Impact of the Soviet Takeover Among the People of Afghanistan The United States aid toward the Mujahedeen helped defeat the Soviets. There would be lots of reforms that will happen to the Afghan government.

What Changed in the Way Society Worked? The Afghans wanted change in their society, but the Soviets gave it to them in a way they didn’t want, through violence and war. The Soviets thought that the president of Afghanistan, Hafizullah Amin, wasn’t a good leader for the Afghans and for Afghanistan so they killed Anim and replaced him with Barak Karmal.

What Changed in the Way Society Worked? The Afghans fought back with weapons given to them from the United States. In 1989 the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan but the society in Afghanistan would still be corrupted.
